What should the engaging news look like for teenager?
Recently the form of media had a tremendous changes on how to deliver news. Technology is one if the reason that bring such a great impact on how the world change, include the way information transferred.
The status quo in Indonesia, more and more teenagers are reluctant to stay away from what is called a social media. Facebook, Twitter, and You-tube are little example of social media that teenager cannot get away from. Teenager can access such social media at ease. According to the survey, 83% of Indonesian population has used social media as part of daily life. This phenomenon happens for several reasons. The first, communication devices like smart phone and tablet PC consider to be very affordable for Indonesian citizen even from low income. Having Rp. 300.000 or 30 US$ in their hand, they can have a smart phone that has Android system in it. This will make more and more people to get connected to each other through social media.
Seeing this situation, journalist can take this advantage to embrace the enthusiasm from teenager to read news. As a journalist, we have to be dynamic on what is going on. Just like what ﾓMark Briggsﾔ said, the writer for a book entitled ﾓJournalism Nextﾔ, the current journalist should be able to cope up with the latest environment that is the usage of the technology. And basically technology is just the machine that will not work, unless the human itself giving the meaning into it. Journalist can use Social media as a tool to encourage teenager to read information as it will appear Interactive and enough. What it means with interactiveness is that unlike the ordinary printed newspaper that is only one way communication, news through social media can be two way communication because right after they read the news, they can share and give their opinion toward the news. This will be seen that the reader might feel that he/she has become part of the news itself. And then what it means with ﾓenoughﾔ is that the reader might have given an opportunity to read what they are really interested in, journalist can make section where certain type of news can be categorized into that news only, just like it has sequence that never come to an end. This will create such a big thirst for the reader to keep reading the news. Also the reader are given more freedom to read and select news as they like.
Another things to remember to engage more and more teenager to read news is that the news should be wrap up with the style of casual writing. The selection of the sophisticated word might not hook them. You can imagine how they can get the idea of writing, ﾓThe triumph of Manchester City has been acquired for the last 2 years in a row!ﾔ even though the message is interesting that Manchester City can win two times in a row, but the words selection is however just too difficult to let them understand.
Over all, to engage more teenager reading a news, a Journalist have to bring the news as close as their environment. Providing news in a newspaper might not work recently. Social media will the best answer for this question, not only because it's the closest to their environment, but also the teenager will see this as a new lifestyle. In addition, the selection of word might work best if the news are provided with less sophisticated word so that they might not feel alienated.
